Finnish Civil War 1918 – memories of relatives

The Finnish Civil War was held between January 27 and May 15, 1918, between the Finnish Senate, the Government and the Rebellion, led by the Finnish People's Delegation. The Senate's armed forces were white troops and the Red Army of Finland. Outside the world, Soviet Russia supported the Red and the German Empire White.

The Civil War was part of the state and social transformation of Europe during the First World War. In 1917 the world war led to the collapse of the Russian Empire and the political struggle against power, and ultimately Russia's civil war. As a result of the collapse of Russia, the Empire, the Grand Duchy of Finland, proclaimed independence in Finland on December 6, 1917, but the intensification and disengagement of internal tensions within Finnish society led to power and military crisis in 1917, resulting in two national armed forces.

The war affected differently the Joutsiniemi family and relatives. The biggest battles in the final phase of the war are taking place in Tampere and its surroundings about 10 km from Joutsiniemi. Also relatives living in Helsinki encountered the war in different ways. However, based on the information gathered, it seems that our family survived the trials of war at a fairly low level.

Kari Sipilä has collected relatives' memories of the attached document.
